These developers didn't stumble into minimalism. They chose it, because they understood what the Game Boy programmers learned by necessity: constraint is a creative superpower.
The Itch.io Generation
Platforms like Itch.io have become the natural home for this philosophy. Browse the site for an hour and you'll find games built in 48-hour game jams, games with intentionally limited color palettes, games that run in a browser window smaller than a sticky note. Some are rough. Many are extraordinary.
What they share is intentionality. A game made in a weekend with three colors and one sound effect had to make every single decision count. There was no room for the design equivalent of a mumbled sentence. Everything is load-bearing.
